...What is a list of the minimum gear I need to get started?Where can I learn more about this sport? Is this a sport that takes hundreds of dollars to get started or is it cheap to get into? I ain't buyin' a boat so I'll have to go on someone else's.

Get a spinning real combo $20-$50, line, afew Lewes some hooks (varying with the fish you want to catch) and your all set for around $70 to $80 max. then as you fish more you buy more expensive things like higher quality reels poles ext. good luck

Get a rod and reel set at the nearest Bass Pro Shop after you tell them what fish you are going after locally and some bait and JUST DO IT! You will learn quickly from experience.

Go to a fishing gear store. Ask them about the local fishing, and they'll help set you up with what you need.

Freshwater fishing (specifically bass) is easily my favorite thing to do. Like any sport you can easily spend hundreds of dollars to start but it's certainly not necessary. This is a great time of year to get into fishing because they are about to spawn. It's when they are easiest to find and when they are the most aggressive. Here is a list of things I would start with.Get a decent rod and reel, I prefer baitcasters, but if your not familiar with them then a spincaster might be the best option. Your best bet would probably be to hit up either Bass Pro Shops or Cabella's and get one of their rod/reel combos. I would go with at least a 6'6" rod with a medium action. If you plan on using live bait then you will need:minnow buckethooksline; I like monofilament and would suggest 8-10lb for spinning reels or 12-14 lb for bait casters.sinkers; any assortment will do just finebobbersIf you plan on using artificial lures:Line; same as aboveLures... here are my go to luresop-r (top water)topwater frog (if you have above water grass and lilly pads in the waterways you will be fishing)white and green spinnerbaitcrankbaits in a variety of colors and depths.soft plastics, 5" worms in Junebug and Watermellon Red should get you startedExtra Wide Gap (EWG) hooks for the wormsSlip sinkers: 1/4oz should be good. If you're fishing in a heavy current or it's windy go with heavier weight. That should be a good start for you. I would suggest that you join a local fishing club as a non-boater. That's going to be your best knowledge base in your area. Here are some good sites that I use on a regular basis.www.basspro.comwww.bassboatcentral.com (tons of info, and info on local bass clubs and tournaments)www.bassresource.comwww.tackleundergro und.com (for making your own lures)www.bassdozer.com

Ugh.....Fishsteelhead gets my vote for Best Answer. His suggested angelfire website has tons of good info for a first time fisherman. To FSH- I see you've upset the "natives" by the many TD's you've already received. I say screw' m! And THUMBS UP to FSH. (wink)
