I wanted to know, and will the people trying to get you to adopt tell you that it was a hunting dog. Also if you say that you want a hunting dog, will they let you adopt one(even if you say that you are a responsible hunter and love your dogs)?

Either call or visit the shelters and ask them.
Probably in the rural areas of West Virgina stray hunting dogs may end up in the shelter. It entirely depends on the individual shelter... some may only allow people interested in the dog as a pet to adopt while others are more lenient. Call around and ask.If I were you I would just research breeds of dog that excel at whatever task you have in mind and find a breeder who breeds them for that purpose. Besides, dogs that are bred for hunting are cheaper compared those that are bred for show.
